When nature holds us back

This week we’re talking about nature’s exclusive gift to us women...periods, pregnancy and menopause. We look at how they affect us in the workplace and what we can do to ensure these blessings don’t turn into curses!

Menstruation is one of the most natural functions in the world. It is a mark of femininity and fertility, and a huge part of life for most women. Yet, for some reason, women are frequently made to feel ashamed or embarrassed simply because they bleed, and, according to new research, this shaming often comes from those closest to them.

A recent study has found that women who experience period shame are more likely to experience other forms of body-based shaming as well—for example, if they regularly feel insecure about their weight or their physical appearance. The study also found that these feelings of shame seem to be especially prevalent among people who come from families where there is not a lot of talk about menstruation in general.
